JRP in Serbia - Results presented at ICA

Dr. Aleksandra Krstić, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Political Science, University of Belgrade, and second PI of the JRP project for Serbia, attended the ICA conference in Paris last May and successfully presented the paper “Let us entertain you”: infotainment as the leading journalistic role in Serbia’s polarized media context” coauthored with Dr. Ana Milojević, M.A. Kristina Milić and Dr. Nikola Jović from the Faculty of Political Science, University of Belgrade. The paper was presented within the panel “One Region, Different Contexts: Media and Journalism across Central and Eastern European Countries,” sponsored by the Polish Communication Association.

The study examined the dominance of infotainment as the leading journalistic role in the context of Serbia, a country with high societal and political polarization, rising competitive authoritarianism, and rapid decline in press freedom. The paper discussed the main results of the JRP Project in Serbia. More specifically, it analyses the infotainment journalistic role, its dimensions, role conceptions, and role performances based on the quantitative content analysis of 6.067 media text across 11 news outlets (print, radio, TV, online) and surveys with 129 journalists working in Serbian media.
